The Oakenbury Curse Part 3

Witless lead Odd around every obstacle in the high-street, but even for such an experienced dog, the task was hard. Almost immediately, Odd tripped on an overturned crate. Then, halfway up the high street, he tripped on something else entirely. Something heavy and soft and warm.

A person.

“Oh my!” Odd screeched, “I’m so sorry!”

An aggravated snore was his only response.

After that, the air grew colder as they climbed the hill. Odd could hear the clock before he reached it — a faint ticking beneath the silence, steady like a heartbeat. But when Odd neared it, that ticking grew loud. So loud that Odd could feel it through his shoes.

He was close.
